We had spent a week exploring the upper part of Alaska, and were were now headed to the Inside Passage. Our youngest daughter Jerie and her husband Chris, manage a fishing Lodge in Point Baker, Alaska, which is located on Prince of Wales Island.
We spent 5 days there, with our Aunt and Uncle, fishing and enjoying the scenery. Since we had spent the week exploring 4 of Alaska’s national Park, we had to fly into Petersburg from Anchorage. The airport has a cool Northern Light corridor

We met our aunt and uncle in Juneau, then flew to Petersburg, where the fishing lodge would pick us up the following day. At the airport, Uncle Mike pulled out a ball cap to wear for the week…he never wears a cap!! We stayed at the Tide’s Inn and had an early dinner at the Tinnery (the clam chowder was delicious). We spent the evening exploring Petersburg.

After dinner we learned about the history of Petersburg…it was named for Peter Buschmann, who built the first cannery in the late 1890s.

Around downtown Petersburg, you could find garbage cans that looked like the original canned fish labels.

The next morning, it was a short walk to the Petersburg Harbor

We watched our son-in-law, Chris, drive the Calder Mountain boat into the harbor. He is one of the boat captains for the lodge.

While Chris went to get a box of potatoes, we headed for the grocery store to buy a few things for our granddaughter to enjoy. She normal only has Gosner boxed milk, so “real” milk is a luxury.

We took the groceries down to the boat, where Chris met us and showed us his 50 pound box of potatoes, which cost $107.00. We will never complain about the cost of potatoes again!!

With our groceries stowed on board, we headed to lunch at a local restaurant.

It was time to board the boat for the 1 1/2 hour trip to Point Baker.

We passed through the Wrangell Narrows and headed toward Prince of Wales Island

Pulling into Point Baker, Alaska. The Calder Mountain complex consists of two lodges, we stayed at Sunny Point.

We got settled in our room and were assigned our fishing pants and boots.

It was then off for our first fishing trip. The staff came to the dock to wish us good luck.

Our son-in-law, Chris, took us out to show us the ropes and our granddaughter, Kaylee came along.

We fished for 1 hour and 45 minutes…7 Rock fish, 1 43 lb halibut, 1 pink salmon, a huge clump of kelp, and 1 whale sighting. Not bad for our first afternoon.

The best part of fishing is coming back to the dock for pictures with your catch.

One of the cool things about Calder Mountain Lodge, is they clean and pack the fish. They provide all of the fishing gear and wash the boat so that it is ready for the next day.

Before bed, we gave Kaylee her new pink sleepers.

It was going to be a great week.
